Los Angeles Lakers legend James Worthy has expressed his excitement and appreciation for Anthony Davis’ monumental three-year contract extension with the team. The extension, valued at $186 million, is set to see the 30-year-old forward earn an impressive average of $62 million per year.

Speaking on Spectrum SportsNet, Worthy enthusiastically celebrated the achievement, stating, “Let the church say Amen. I’m happy that the league has grown as it has.”

The Lakers icon took a trip down memory lane, recalling the early ’80s when labor issues loomed over the league. He remembered Commissioner David Stern’s transformative leadership that paved the way for the NBA’s incredible growth and global recognition.

“I remember in the early 80s my rookie we’re about to go on strike. Larry O’Brien was still Commissioner,” the three-time NBA champion said. “And then Commissioner [David] Stern came in and all of a sudden you had Magic [Johnson] and Larry [Bird], you had CBS contract, you had all this global attention.

“Now these guys they’ve continued their success, but they’re benefitting from a lot of success over a long period of time. I’m happy for them.”

During the 2022-23 season, Davis showcased his prowess on the court, averaging 25.9 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 2.6 assists in 34 minutes per game. His contributions have been instrumental in the Lakers’ pursuit of victory and their continuous impact on the league’s landscape.
